From Bde/Reference incident of friendly fire, 4 men of the 502 were dusted off. 1 was released with minor wounds. 3 were doing fine. No one was seriously wounded from the 502 unit. The 502 unit was confused on the boundary line,They moved down the ridge line not knowing they were approach -ing another AO.

Equipment found by C/2-1 at grid XD955451 1 sensor TRC-3A (550335, 4 WP smoke, 20 rounds 7.62 linked, 5 US frags, 500 rounds M-60. 6 claymores, 6 smokes, 1 pound of C-4, 1 hand flare, 10 flares with gun, 50 mig-mag, 1 pocket C grenade, 3 trip flares, 2 M-79 HE rounds, 1 Soviet light machine gun drum, 20 rounds 7.62 and 1 US rucksack.

From Bde at 011615 ......20-30 NVA were spotted in open area at 725477. At least 10 NVA were KIA at 021645. The equipment was evacuated. Element was identified as the 35th Sapper Battalion and the POW that was captured said they were to hit Khe Sanh this evening. All elements should be on alert for possible ground attacks.

From CP/B Co at grid 942454 element found two bunkers 4' x 4' and 5' x 5' with 2' overhead cover ( logs and dirt ). Element found 15- 82 mm rounds partially burned, 1 chicom canteen with shrapnel holes, 1 US pistol belt with ammo pouch, 3 plastic bags with blood on them, 1 NVA cleaning kit for a AK-47, small region11can of PETN explosive , 3- 82 mm mortar fuses, and 1 demolition bag (US). On a trail heading south , they found a chicom claymore fixed in a mechanical ambush with a trip wire trigger. Everything will be destroyed.

Size of the camp 100m X 75m....Equipment found: 22pairs of old tennis shoes, 4 old NVA ponchos and 21 .51 cal rounds.

From convoy (jackal 48) had a S+P go off embankment. The driver is pinned under the cab. They need something with heavy lift capability....Suggest hook or crane. Request that a medivac stand by if the man is still alive. They will need a M-88 to recover the truck. (driver died at scene)

From C/2-1 at grid 958434 spotted 1 NVA lying on the ground who appeared to be dead or seriously wounded.There were 4-5 NVA standing around him. Attempted to fire Arty but was check fired due to CA of Pink Team and A 4/3. Results 1 NVA KRA due to scheduled fires this morning.

Late Entry: From 4/A Co/ at grid 941435 ...Element spotted 1 NVA and engaged with SAF. Swept area finding 1 heavy blood trail heading south. While following blood trail, element was ambushed by 2-3 NVA with SAF and chicoms, NVA evaded to south, 1st platoon is moving to intercept them. Also NVA had hung cardboard on trees along the trails leading toward the road. Captured 1 RPG launcher, 3 US WIA (minor) 1/C Co is following blood trail now.

He made contact w/Delta Company 2/3 and killed. Result; 2 VC/NVA KIA. CIA; 1 AK-47 w/14 rounds of ammo, 2 rucksacks, 1 first aid kit, 1 NVA pistol belt, 1 NVA officer's belt, 1 pair of black pj's, 2 NVA ponchos, 2 sets of extra clothing, green and documents. The VC/NVA were wearing bright green long sleeve shirts and pants. One had a NVA helmet. Equipment and docu -ments will be back hauled to LZ Tiger.

From D Co CPT/CPT Hummel DTG 201600 at grid 426473. LTC Coast was moving toward LOH at above location when he was hit on the top of head by main rotor blade. He was evacuated to Duc Pho by LOH. LTC Coast Albert F. died at 91st Evac Chu Lai of injuries sustained at 1600 hrs.

Suspects there were 2-3 NVA in the area moving NE and that they evaded E.

Was on SouthWest trail moving West with documents and no weapons. All equipments a documents will be back hauled to Professional.

Last occupancy expected to be one week ago. No trails in the area. All hooches and bunkers were destroyed and MAPS were placed in the area.

Ref # 33...from 2/2 Alpha Company: KIA was 35 years old and was wearing; Ho Chi's Minh sandals, green pants, shirt, and underwear , chicom canteen, and pistol belt. Carrying a rucksack containing the following; 101 pounds of potatoes, mess gear, 1 pair of sandals, 1 poncho, book with names and a small amount of money. Negative weapon or ID, KIA was moving East to East-West on trail and was engaged at 50 meters. All equipment and documents will be back hauled to LZ Professional.

Alpha Company 1/2 at 131500 vic 184014 element searched area into which Arty was fired last night, finding 1 bunker; 12' x 4' x 5' and was built in the last two weeks. Found 10 expended AK-47 rounds, small amounts of rice and tools. Fresh footprints running West. Element followed blood trail for 300 meters when it ran out. Trails runs in all directions and well used. Element will MAP area tonight.

From 2/1 Alpha Company DTG 140730, at grid 185014. Element had a mech detonate; Results 2 VC/NVA KIA, Who were approx age was 30 and 17 years old. Both were wearing black PJ's and had negative weapons and ID, or pack. KIA's were moving west on and East-West trail in the direction of a hooch found earlier. Elment suspects there were additional VC/NVA in area of MAP detonation because KIA's were bandaged. Clothing will be back hauled to LZ Professional .

VC were moving South on North-South trail, They were wearing OD shirts and pants, pink underwear, red "T" shirts and NVA bush hats. They were carrying rucksacks and 2 machetes. They had some notes, a receipt for something, and 20 cans of C's which had been opened and were starting to spoil. Equipment and docu -ments will be back hauled to LZ Professional.

To Bde/ at grid 178021 Delta Company 1/1 found 2 hooches on a NE-SW trail, one hooch was 8' x 6', the other 10' x 20' found nothing of significance in hooches. Also found bomb shelter 3' x 2'. Near hooches was 1 or 2 acres field w/crops 2' or 3' high w/one scare crow. All were destroyed.

The bobby trap was a chicom grenade with a trip wire trigger. The wire and grenade were very old. Trip wire was close to ground. Element leader said it seemed to be on old early warning device. They searched the area with negative results.

They were covered with 2 layers of dirt and logs . At location 189017 found a hooch made of logs and thatched roof 12' x 6' x 8'. There was room for 9 people to sleep, below hooch was a tunnel 5' x 6' x 3'. They found empty boxes which had a medical, cream at one time. There was a trail leading North. Clothes will be back hauled, remainder will be destroyed.

Following trail they came on a booby trap made of a LAW with a trip wire trigger. 25 meters further down the trail they found some explosives with a trip wire trigger. The explosives were buried. Both were blown in place ...The second crater produced a crater 6" deep and 12" in diameter. 25 meters down the trail they found 4 hooches 15' x 7' x 10'. All had bunkers and one had a 12' tunnel under it. Nothing was found in the area.... hooches were destroy -ed...Both bobby traps appeared to be set today.

To Bde/Bilstrom ; at 1145 hrs. at 132285. Element has 8 detainees, 2 females age 50, 1 boy-8, 1 girl-7, 1 boy-6 and 2 babies. While searching area found 3 hooches 20' x 10' with 5' x 5' bunkers. All hooches were connected with tunnels 2' x 3'. Inside one hooch found dried potatoes, pans and farming tools. Around hooch were gardens with potatoes and fruit trees. The detainees stated there were men in the area who evaded when the element landed. The women refused to talk.

Sur -rounded and resulted in 1 male detainee, his age was 30, and individual wearing OD shirt and pants with negative ID, weapon or documents. VC was cooling food plate for three persons. Area searched finding 2 - 6' x 8' bunkers with a tunnel linking them. 2 trails: North-South and East-West, both well used. Extracted detainee to An Dau for interrogat -ion. Later man will be sent to the IPW pad in Chu Lai.

To Bde/Lark: EM ( SNO623) FM Charlie Company /3 ...Had M-16 discharge, removing left middle finger. Weapon was on safe prior to leaving night location. EM was cutting trail and when the element stopped to take a break the EM placed the weapon on his lap. It discharged as he stood up. EM's middle finger was struck, & evacuated to 91st Evacuation Hospital at Chu Lai by LOH at 1035 hours. Rear directed to get a statement from EM. EM leader will also submit a statement in determination of cause of incident.

To Bde/Simon: To Rear/WEP: DTG 271020 at grid 256126, 2nd platoon 2nd squad Charlie Company while on patrol along old North-South trail when element hit bobby trap resulting in 2 US WIA. The explosion made a hole 2" deep and 4" wide and was pressure release detonated type. the trail showed signs of recent use. Requested dust off and as dust off was coming in it set off another bobby trap in the area. Resulting in 1 US WIA with shrapnel in the hand and arm. The first two casualities were in feet and leg.
