Spot Report: A Co 3rd platoon at 011140 at grid 716336. One KIA w/weapon in MAP.

01     Sept     1330

Ref item # 19   VC/NVA were moving N to E wearing khaki  in shirt & black pj pants, with pith helmet, 1 AK-47 w/no magazine, pack with clean set of clothes-khaki pants & black pj shirts. Enemy approx 22 years of age, tall and well feed, with neatly trimmed hair cut. Had 2 pieces of NVA plastic 5'x5'.

Spot Report- D Co 2nd platoon 2nd squad at grid 688308 at 1455 hrs. found 1 grave that was dug yesterday. One male -35 years of age was buried in black pj's Had one arm above ground-and was killed by Arty on gun ships yesterday. There was 1 trail running NE to SW and  there  were no tracks of other personnel on trail.

Spot Report; at 1915 hrs . D Company had  a MAP detonate-results were 1 KIA that was wearing green shirt and shorts and moving to the West. Will check further in the morning.

01     Sept     2320

 A Company DTG 011745 at grid  723338, had a MAP detonate resulting in 4 NVA KIA'S, all males, CIA-2 AK-47's and 1 RPG launcher w/round. Personnel had (4) heavy packs and were moving E to W. While A Co was policing up area at 1815 hrs. 1 more NVA walked into the area and was engaged w/small arms fire, netting one AK-47 w/magazine and rounds, 1 rucksack and 1 NVA KIA.

Ref item #37; 1 KIA-female 22 years of age with green shirt, black pj bottoms-150 meters West found a hooch that was destroyed, but was in the process of being rebuilt. Destroyed hooch.

02     Sept     1200

Report from Warlord 15; 0940 hrs. at grid 640435. found 6 new bunkers and engaged...results: partially destroyed. At 0950 hrs. at grid 621461 fresh wood was being taken to high ground for possible bunker construction. At 1000 hrs. at grid 610477 found 3-20' sampans well built to be used possibly for equipment transportation.....all destroyed. At 1010 hrs. at grid 612475 found bunker, fresh signs of activity.....bunker area destroyed. At 1015 at grid 622471. Tunnel went into East bank. possibly for storage of sampans. Area had many signs of recent activity, hooches being built.

03     Sept     1050

Dust off request from A Co at grid 711354. Line # 105, PFC Jerry Dean Patton. He had a minor hip wound and one round grazed eye brow. Needed basket....Walked in front of fighting position and did not answer when challenged. Routine dust off request at 0655 hrs......completed at 1047 hrs.

03     Sept     1700

From Bato; Contact mission; Contact made by friendly element at approx 200 meters, results;1 VC KIA, 1 AK-47 CIA. Engaged with M-16 & M-79.

03     Sept     1955

To Bde Zimmer-Spot Report; D Company 1st squad 2nd platoon at  evading to the East pursued, 1 KIA, 1 AK_47, He was approx 14  years old and was wearing a white shirt & brown shorts, the others were 29-30 and wore black shirt & blue shorts…..1 pouch had some papers in it and they will, back hauled. Some packs were CIA and haven’t been  check -ed yet.

From Delta Co 1st squad 2nd platoon at grid 687288. Serial numbers of CIA AK’S-6566361, 2007, 63301. Found on KIA’s; 1 GI compass, 1 GI ammo pouch, 1 NVA pistol belt, 8 loose rounds of AK, 1 sewing kit,1 nylon fishing line w/hook, 1 GI razor with 2 blades, 28 rounds in all 3 weapons,1 bar paluminum canteen w/cover, 1 waterproof bag (GI type) , 2 mess kits, 1 empty sandbag, cigarette lighter w/ 504 on it. 1 emblem gold star on red background.

04 Sept 1025

From Recon 1st squad at grid 617405 At DTG 040830, found 2 -8’x8’ hooches in good condition, two trails-one NE to SW(well used).The other E-W trail is not well used. Found-1 steel pot, 4 basket packs, 1 bow-old. One tunnel 150' was long and well used…had sleeping positions, and place for candles…will destroy hooches & tunnel later.

04 Sept 1630

From Bde;

1. Indication that enemy will withdraw through Minh Long and CIDG area.

2. Relay this to Minh Long.

3. Have them notify 11th Bde, through us, of enemy movement. Enemy coming from NE to SW.

05 Sept 1325

Company 3rd platoon, had MAP detonate at grid 688308 at DTG 051310, resulting in 3 VC/NVA KIA. All were males between 20 & 26 years old. Two were wearing long pj’s and 1 was wearing black shorts.

06 Sept 1440

Spot Report; D Co at 1427 hrs. at grid 688299 had a MAP detonate, resulting 2 VC KIA women, ages 40 & 25 moving NW to SE across LZ...1 carrying a pouch w/potatoes and soap & black pj bottoms & grey tops.

Dust off for A Co 4th platoon-Self inflicted gun shot wound in foot...Need Jungle penetrator for Line # 134, dust off 80 called 1705 hrs. & completed 1725 hrs. Priority

Spot Report; D Co 1st platoon 1st squad at 1645 hrs. at grid 676283. had 1 MAP detonate and the results were 2 VC KIA. With pack gray shirt & black shorts, basket type pack-1 fish net and several hooks, 6-8 potatoes, 1 GI dog tag chain, 1 cigarette lighter, 1- 1 1/2 lbs of berries. 1 AK-44 bolt action rifle, 5 rounds and clip, 1 GI frag lot # MA11-5, 1 GI poncho liner, belt w/big silver buckle, 1 ammo pouch, 1 8 transistor radio (operable), 5 lbs of rice and several small bags of rice w/some corn. 2 pages of documents and both have GI haircuts..Since May we have 101 KIA's.

Spot Report; B Co 3rd platoon 2nd squad at 1505 hrs. at grid 625313.engaged 1 VC female age 17 at 100 meters, moving S-N results; 1 VC KIA, wearing a string of beads, gray cotton shirt, long black pants, carrying; 1 fish net, 1 pair of gray pants, w/rifle sling for belt, 1 GI sock w/2 old packs of tobacco...all in burlap sandbag on a trail.

Late entry from B Company while the EOD Team was blasting with Co B, Line # 22 Mayhow Daniel T. was struck by flying rock and it broke the bone in one of his arms. He was sitting in the place designated by the EOD Team when struck. He is at the 27th Surgical Hospital in Chu Lai-he will be evacuated to Japan....time was 1445 hrs.

Dust off request for A Co at grid 639448 hit booby trap, 080810. Line # 82 PFC Russell Chamberlain-received facial wounds. Line # 87 PFC Michael Gordon-received multiple wounds left leg. O+ blood requested...Dust off 80 called 0813 hrs. and completed 0829 hrs.

09 Sept 0950

Spot Report; From Tra Bong, SF-At 040350, received over 100 mortar rounds with coordinated ground attack from 3 sides directed against District HHC (342079) and ARVN Ranger Compound (347881). NVA heavily armed-used sapper tactics. Gunships and Arty supported defense with results: 1 US KIA, 3 US WIA, and 60 ARVN's and CIDG-unk and ARVN KIA-unk. Light damage to Battery A 3/18 Arty. Como bunker destroyed...3 NVA CIA-when they withdrew there were numerous NVA bodies left lying around.

09 Sept 1058

A Company requests dust off for Line # 88 PFC Maurice Harville - cut left knee with machete, needs stitches. Dust off completed at 1058 hrs. - routine dust off.

From Bde Eads : intell C-3 rating- at grid 620520 3 Sept unknown unit on 21st Regiment.. with a strenght-100. Mission; move wounded men to BaDien at grid 490450, near base and await supplies.

From Helix 38; Found what looks like a 50 cal pit at grid 753318 that was positioned along a stream bed. At grid 731308 found fresh farming and cultivation never observed before.

10 Sept 1300

From B company 3rd platoon 2nd squad; discovered 14 hooches that were fair to well constructed, seven which have bunkers attached. Bunkers fortified with 3 -8' logs and GI sandbags w/overhead cover. Bunkers averaged 4'x4' w/3' in depth. Found what looked like a broom factory-consisting of two hooches loaded with brooms.

A Company is in Duc Pho for stand-down.

11 Sept 1110

Spot Report: C Co CP at grid 597399 found a small tunnel complex. Area had 5- 3'x5' fighting positions overlooking river, positions had overhead cover and tunnels 3-5 feet into the ground. The area is overgrown and cannot be seen from the air. The tunnels were dug under the trees, concealing them from aerial observation. There was a old trail running N-S along the river. CP will destroy 11 positions before they leave.

Spot Report; C Co 1st platoon found at grid 606395 at 1710 hrs. an 81 mm HE round inside a canister. Round was on a small unused trail beside highway. Trail ran N-S.....Round was about 1 month old-blew up in place.

12 Sept 0835

LZ for C Co at grid 599397 to pick up Line # 91 for medical problems.

12 Sept 0957

Spot report; C Co 2nd squad 2nd platoon at grid 605408 found 1 sampan 15 feet long, and it was very old and not used in quite a while. Sampan had a tin bottom and the rest was made out of wood.-destroyed. There were several tracks in the area that were made by approx 2 persons. 1 track appeared to be from a middle aged man wearing Ho Chi's. The other appeared to be from a small boy bare footed They were headed South.

12 Sept 1122

Dust off requested for C Co for Line # 51 SP/4 Dwayne Hosea had a blasting cap go off giving him shrapnel wounds and burns on one of his legs. Routine dust off at grid 606407. Dust off 52 completed at 1230 hrs.

12 Sept 1930

From C Co 1st squad, 3rd platoon grid at 596406 DTG 121845 discovered small tunnel complex consisting of two tunnels each 10 ft in length, 7 feet deep w/stair case. Small bamboo frame to conceal one entrance, the other entrance was covered with undergrowth. One old trail running E to W . No recent activity for approx 2 months....surrounding tunnel had five old fighting positions-3'x3'x3'.

Element of B Company found 1 dead VC at grid 623315. Man was was approx 20 years old and has been dead for about 2 months-clothing and body decayed. Cause of death is believed to be from gunships.

Spot Report; D Company 3rd platoon 2nd squad on DTG 131020 at grid 749326, spotted one VC/NVA wearing dark green uniform and carrying one small pack and one weapon. Moving SSW down trail. Engaged at 300 meters with M-60 & M-79.

Spot Report; B Company 1st platoon 1st squad on 131335 at grid 633313. One KIA by small arms fire-male approx 25 years old wearing black pj's...Other evaded to the East.Was beating rice at the time. Negative trails in the area. Negative equipment. Engaged at 200 meters .. Negative rice recovered.

13 Sept 2333

Spot Report to Bde Richardson: D Company 3rd platoon at 2020 hrs. at grid 745332, from there NL at grid 745332 spotted 6-10 lights in a column and moving to the SW...now calling in firing mission, checked fire, lights stopped moving at 2045 hrs.-still observing area.

14 Sept 1935

Bde Richardson-Intel- grids 704459, 715434, & 701468s has c-4 rating, DIOCC (Defense Intelligence Operations Coordination Center) on 14 Sept, That there is a possibly that 250 men with crew served weapons and small arms will attack AO. Their mission is possibly to mortar LZ Liz and attack OP's in N Duc Pho this evening.

15 Sept 0710

From Bde French; at grids BS897234, BS903224, 905243, C-3 rating. 14 Sept 70....NVA from 403rd Battalion....mission; Ambush Red Ball and snipe at soldiers and cadre moving along the Red ball.

15 Sept 1310

Spot Report; At grid 712337, the 38 element of D Company had a MAP detonate at 1235 hrs. Results; 1 VC/NVA KIA-male approx 20 years old and moving to SW. He was wearing green fatigue shirt (not US), purple shorts and OD T shirt. Carrying tobacco pouch with lighter and one rice hook. Negative papers...had fairly long hair on top and sides.

Spot report; 2nd squad, 3rd platoon, D Company at 1040 hrs. at grid 748328, spotted 1 VC on trail running E-W at approx 75 meters away was engaged with 1 round M-16 resulting in 1 VC KIA-approx 25 years old and wearing OD shorts, long sleeve OD shirt, carrying rice hook,small pouch of tobacco, and a cigarette lighter w/ 403 engraved on it.

Dust off request from C Company 2nd platoon, 1st squad at grid 698387. Air burst on booby trap. 2 US WIA........ SP/4 Mark T. Heavrin head & multiple wounds to legs.....Lt John Nebel-head wounds. requested at 1135 hrs. and complete at 1208 hrs.

17 Sept 1300

Spot Report see item # 31. Point man of 2nd platoon 1st squad tripped booby trap resulting in 2 US WIA's- 1 serious and one very serious. Booby trap was in trail in ground, and believed to have been tripped by point man, w/delay fuse. It got 2nd & 3rd man in march. Trail was running N-S. Reports of additional bombs are false, only a pile of sticks beside a tree. Original bomb was a mackerel can filled with explosive placed in ground in trail. Believed to be pressure release. No trip wires in area. Men in file were 10 meter intervals. Size of patrol squad size.

17 Sept 1505

From S-1; SP/4 Heavrin, C 4/3 dusted off at 171209 was expired on arrival at 23rd Med. Time of expiration believed to be 1140 hrs.

17 Sept 1900

Dust off San Juan Hill , For PFC Edward LaPlant -105 degree temperature. Time 1810 hrs. & completed 1842 hrs.

17 Sept 1930

Spot Report ; A Company 1st platoon, 1st squad at grid 659334, DTG 171750, Found 12 82 mortar rounds under a loose rock, where there was enough room for a tube. The rounds were rusty. 1 round had a larger fuse then the rest. They will be back hauled tomorrow. There was a trail running N-S in that area...will mech this area and destroy.

18 Sept 1035

Spot Report from C Company 1st platoon, 1st squad, DTG 181017 at grid 683379, found barrel and receiver group of a M-60. Found in dry stream bed that is partially buried. These parts are old and rusty. Serial # on barrel 28524R. Parts were beaten on rock.

18 Sept 1740

Spot Report: From C Company DTG 181700, at grid 688366. CP found bunker 6'x6'x5', inside 2 tunnels, 5'x7' long, 3' in diameter, 6 months since last used...small overgrow trail branched cast to low grown....bunkers destroyed.

From Bde: Intel from 525 11 Sept B-3 rating. A VC provincial level meeting held. They discussed requisitions and purchasing plans for winter & spring. Following are VC areas:1-Ngo DA at grid 625550, 2-Nhen at grid 610500, 2- Da Banc at grid 665450. From Bde 1550 pads.

Found several hooches, some were under construction, some hit by ordinance. 2 areas of food storage, 300 lbs cap, 2 obstacles courses w/2 rolls of barbed wire around, 5 letters or pages from diary, 2 torches, 2 baskets of practice chicoms, 2 bins-100 lbs cap, 1 poncho, 1 flashlight battery, 2 NVA canteens, 1 oil rag, 4' blade, 2 hooches, 2 whiskey baskets,1-9mm magazine w/6 rounds, 3 AK-47 pouches, empty ammo, 2 medicine bottles filled, 1 home-made rocket-3' long, 1 small US gas mask, 1 NVA ammo pouch, 1 RPG, 40 cobs corn, plastic bags in metal container. Area cover-approx 100x 200 meters. Main trail ran to the West.

Dust off, San Juan Hill: requests dust off for ...Line # 106 PFC Kuhn Company C ...M-16 wound to the right foot(next toe to large one) --self inflicted.

23 Sept 1730

Company B 3rd platoon found one 81mm mortar round, unfired, in case. Burn marks on case, quite old. Found in old NDP at grid 645478. No trails and no activity .....round blown in place..

23 Sept 1715

Company B 2nd platoon found a enemy camp at 1700 hrs., at grid 646464. including 27 hooches, bunkers, misc military equipment & home-made ordinances....+obstacle courses.

23 Sept 1900

From Bde; Inserted Blues at 1445 hrs. to check area... found to be used by friendly earlier, extracted Blues at 1500 hrs. at grid 619429. Observed 1 VC w/weapon evaded, inserted Blues at 1505 hrs., observed 3 more VC evading, w/negative weapon, were engaged w/small arms fire, resulting in 1 VC KIA. Also found bunkers in area recently used, bunkers were reinforced w/rocks and timbers. Could be a meeting place, extracted Blues at 1530 hrs. in route to box # 67.

24 Sept 1220

Sent Airlift Request for insertion of C Co, B Co, Rcn Co, & Command Group...D Co to Bde Eads.

Intel from 5th SFGroup F-3 rating:DTG 21 Sept, at grid 603463. Food trading & storage area, security 1 VC platoon.

Following changes are made to original plan: A Co - no change...1st squad of A Co will remain in present AO as stay behind...B Co remains in discovered VC/NVA base camp as stay behind..D Co extracted to San Juan Hill 1st squad of D Co will remain as stay behind for 2 days...C Co as scheduled to proposed LZ. Routine dust off at grid 645477, engineer w/ B Co 104 degree temperature, possibly malaria.....dust off could not land due to the ground fog and will return in the morning.

26 Sept 1120

Spot Report to Bde/Eads; B Co 3rd platoon found 21 bunkers DTG 261030 at grid 679471. Indication of recent activity, with small trails thru area...no activity in the past 2 weeks.

26 Sept 1715

Company D requests dust off; at pick-up point 638448. Line # 58 hand-frag booby trap.....Line # 122 multiple frag wounds over body, KCS frag wounds head.Dust off urgent, whole blood requested B+: 1 litter & 1 ambulatory. Pick-up completed at 1735 hrs. DTG of incident 261705. Device set off on edge of old NDP.

C Company spotted 2-3 lights moving down-hill away from LZ to lower ground, moving (at grid 595467) to NW into the valley. It appears that they are moving out of the area.

Spot Report; From Company A, 1st platoon, DTG 1545; spotted 1 NVA 25 meters in front of point man. Time: 1250 hrs. and at grid 600468. Enemy appeared to be working on the hooch. Engaged w/small arms fire, escaped to W on trail.
