Late entry: Recon walked up on a pressure release booby trap on a mud trail. Mud washed away booby trap so it was exposed. Trap was old and area showed no signs of recent use, however booby trap was in good condition. Contained approx 1/4 # PETN from markings, look like it was RED made. Will haul back all except explosives. Will blow up in place.

Spot report: D Co, 1st platoon 2nd squad at grid BS627529 received a total of 8 full magazines of AK fire and about 3 RPG's......resulting in 2 US WIA. Dust-off completed at 1415 hrs. Fire mission was delayed until the completion of the dust-off. At 1500 hrs. Air Cav arrived in AO, gunships were deployed to the point of contact. At 1500 hrs requested lift ships to move one element into contact area. Lift was made by Warlord slick. Blues and ground element were inserted at 1615 hrs. w/negative results...RTO of 1st platoon, 1st squad, saw what he believed to be a US soldier w/ blonde hair and wearing khaki clothing and evading to the West from the area of contact.

Spot Report: A Co, 1st platoon spotted 2 VC w/packs & weapons at 700-800 meters West. Maneuvered, received and returned S/A fire from 200 meters. 1 US WIA by small arms fire. Evacuated by Warlords at 1125 hrs. Warlords # 23 & # 39 volunteered assistance and engaged at 1120 hrs. Warlord 23 received S/A fire and reports 1 VC KIA. Arty just completed. The reason for delay in reporting....arty radio was malfunctioning, so CMD radio was used to call Arty mission.

Spot Report: from D Co, 1st platoon , 1st squad at 1830 hrs. at grid BS630529 moved to area of earlier contact. 1st squad fired M-79 H & I and VC/NVA returned fire w/ small arms fire & auto...... from what seems to be a base camp. 1st squad pulled back to good position -due to lack of light. Arty was called in on enemy location and will check on area at first light tomorrow. 3rd platoon C Co will CA into grid BS632527 10 Nov and move down ridge line to the suspected base camp area.

From CP Delta Co: 2nd platoon found a pen (3'x3') that was used for animals, and showed signs of recent use. A 51 cal was found in fair condition and 3 sets of barefoot prints. Part of a green shirt and parts of black pj's. In the bunker, six bodies were found -torn apart by Arty.

Continuation of Spot Report # 21: found two firing pressure devices for booby traps. Bunkers were in ground out of the rocks. Size 5'x5' meters & some were 9'x9', holding 4-6 people. Arty hit them and collapsed positions. Six confirmed killed and possibly up to ten....rocks covered bodies.

Spot Report: From Co B at 1750 hrs. at grid BS 618495, a noise was heard outside the perimeter and was checked out by a four man team. Team left perimeter and tripped a booby trap. Injuries are: CPT Swaney with leg and chest wounds....RLO LT Brown frag wounds on side.....Sp/4 Schultz with minor injuries...KCS - multiple frag wounds on both legs & arms. Dolphin 21 in our AO at this time -agreed to make pick -up ...Completed at 1753 hrs.

Ref item # 28: Details from B Co at 1727-1730 hrs. CP heard explosion , possibly a MAP. Asked 12 & 17 elements if this was their MAP-negative.They also they thought they heard voices to the east in the direction of the explosion.The CO, FO, KCS & 1 man went down the trail 150 meters to the east passing bomb crater and large rock..CO was walking point, and saw 2 bundles of elephant grass - CO stepped off trail and detonated a small explosion that sounded like a rifle shot. Thought to be homemade device-trip detonated. There was a stream to the east and a hooch on the south bank...Will check out at first light in the morning.

From Harper to Bde/Barth: B Co at grid BS620496 while on patrol went out to search the area where 4 people were hit by a booby trap yesterday. In the area they found a small hooch about 4'x5' with no sides and a elephant grass top. Scattered around the area of the hooch they found: 1 US canteen, 1 bush knife, and 1 hammock. Between the point of detonation of the booby trap and the hooch they found 1 VC KIA.There were peanut shells around him, and a mirror was found by him. He was covered by enemy ponchos. The KIA was a male in his 30's and wearing a black top and bottoms. He also wore black underwear and a OD T shirt. He appeared to be hit by a claymore mine and had holes in his chin, legs and chest. He also had a gash on his head. The booby trap which hit the four people had a fish line used as the trip wire.

B Co CP requested as urgent dust-off for 1st LT Donald C. Cramer. Their NDP had received S/A fire and one frag grenade. The CO received a shrapnel wound in the shoulder. Dust-off 82 made the pick-up at 2013 hrs. and brought Cramer to Duc Pho at 2030 hrs.

B Co 2nd platoon, 2nd squad received M-16 fire at grid BS619483. They were fired upon for approximately 10 minutes, however the firing was not constant, that spotted three people evaded to the east w/M-16's and they were wearing black pj's. They searched the area and the only thing they found was a trail-running E-W, Arty was fired: however a check fire had to be called because of the proximity of friendly elements. They were males and carried no packs and engaged 2nd platoon 2nd squad from 200 meters from the NE.

Spot Report: A Co, 4th & 2nd platoons at 1500 hrs. at grid 582464 & 582466 findings follow : 4th platoon found a hooch 5'x4' made of grass in good condition. Also found 3 bunkers w/overhead cover 5'x5'x4', about 1 foot above the ground. Both hooches and bunkers were several months old, but showed recent activity. There were small trails running in all directions for about 50 meters. They destroyed bunkers and hootch....The 2nd platoon found a old ARVN NDP site with a few rounds of M-16 ammo and 4-57 recoilless rifle rounds. Blew in place, and rounds were untarnished of unknown age.

A Co 1st squad was moving to NL on trail NE-SW when they spotted one VC/NVA on the trail. Enemy was walking behind tree when spotted. Element opened up with small arms, and frag's. Enemy returned fire with approximately 10 AK rounds. VC/NVA were carrying AK-47 and wearing a green shirt. Element did not notice what else he was wearing. Enemy evaded to the East. Element swept through the area and found nothing but 5 lb bag of rice. Trail was well used.

Bde from : A co CP at grid 581465, unknown VC/NVC tripped Map at the above coordinate. Results were 1 VC/NVA wounded who evaded to the South. An element followed enemy approx 200 meters through thick growth and found a blood trail, and bandage, 1 SKS w/ serial # T Greek symbol-theta 7511K: it was in good condition with 1 round in the chamber and a total of 10 rounds in the rifle. They also found 1 sandbag with 1 can of ham & eggs, 2 packets of cream and 1 packet of sugar, 1 GI sock with an empty Fresca can, 1 dog tag chain w/P-38 on it,1 cigarette lighter-Zippo, made in Bradford PA-with inscription on both sides-one side read THU-HANG, the other XUAN-BIEM. Above element was told to back haul everything found...a large tree broke blast of the Map.

While on patrol, 1st squad, 2nd platoon Co C at grid 582494 DTG 191700, was moving on well used trail to west when it found a hooch 8'x10'. Approximately 6 months old...signs of recent use-estimate 2-3 days. Large enough to sleep 5 people. Hooch made of bamboo & elephant grass. 5 meters West of hooch was a bunker 8'x8' and was large enough to sleep 5 people. In the bunker was: 1 pair of black pj and one SKS rifle (serial # not legible-due to age) in poor condition.There was fresh cut vegetation in the area. Will mech tonight and destroy tomorrow.

While moving toward their MAP, Co C , 3rd platoon, 2nd squad at grid 585489, DTG 201405, found 8 sleeping positions and 1 letter torn into pieces. They pieced it together and it was in Vietnamese. They will send it in. Three of the sleeping positions were under rocks, and four were lean-to's, and the other one was simply some grass thrown over some branches. There were three trails in the area and each one was running N to S. In the area of the sleeping positions-they also found Ho Chi Minh tracks. Element plan to: mech the area tonight.

From Bde/Annis: Tropical storm Patsy is currently 180 miles NNE of Chu Lai. Center winds are 45 knots. It's moving West at 14 knots. At 1900 hrs., Patsy will be 10-15 miles from Chu Lai. At 2100 hrs, it will hit the coast North of Chu Lai....winds 1200 hrs,-2400 hrs. will be from 30-35 knots and with gusts of 45 knots. While on patrol D Co, 3rd platoon, 2nd squad, at the grid BS663413, had one personnel step off the trail to let element pass by. In doing this, personnel stepped on a booby trap, (pressure release, chicom) the booby trap was under the ground in a ditch. 1 personnel received multiple frag wounds to the left leg & foot. Co C, 2nd platoon, 1st squad at grid 594471, DTG 220845, 3 VC/NVA were moving North down the trail on a well used trail & detonated mech. Results: 3 VC/NVA KIA. KIA # 1. 20 year old w/1NVA pistol belt, GI bayonet, and 6 rounds of AK-47, black shirt and green shorts-negative shoes, rice knife and a neat short hair-cut. KIA # 2. 20 year old male with green shorts and shirt...plastic bag w/ viet lighter, no shoes, neat short hair-cut. KIA # 3 15 year old w/flowery pattern type shirt, blue shorts, no shoes and neat short hair-cut. Friendly element was in NL when mech detonated and sent patrol to Recon area. Element used fire and movement to advance on enemy position and 1 US was wounded from frag or grenade fragment. Element was not sure if they were receiving fire. Dust-off called 221005 completed 221100. wounded in ankle-not serious. 21 rounds Arty fired (HE) and 2 WP rounds, as blocking fire. 1 US WIA .....Line # 30 E-5 Patrick J. Stone - ankle wound.

At 0955 hrs. they spotted 8 more who were 600 meters from above element and it appeared that some were wearing packs. They could tell if they had weapons. Artillery was initiated at 1000 meters as a blocking force. Air Cav was requested at 1000 hrs. and Warlord 23 & 26 were on station at 1034 hrs.

The other one negative articles....1 ace bandage (VC type ) Negative pack or weapons. Another one evaded to the South up a trail. Will set up a squad ambush to see if personnel would return-did not return...Did not engage because personnel was to far away.

Believe booby trap was made of old smoke grenade filled with explosive-was detonated by a trip wire. Was placed above ground and left no crater. Device was placed beside the trench that the elements were moving in. One man was hit in the upper chest, neck & face. One man was hit in abdomen & face. One man hit in upper thighs. One man hit in lower legs. One of the above was DOA. Found smoke grenade near point of detonation. element had no idea of how old booby trap was. Found crater 17"x17" on side of trench-possibly a claymore.

Rounds landed inside & outside perimeter: closest approximately to element was 5 feet and the furthest rounds landed 25-30 meters from friendly personnel. Results were: 4 US WIA, 3 with minor fragmentation wounds (line #'s 103/77/89) & 1 with frag wounds (line # 189) to the legs. Dusted off requested station at 242325. 1 US WIA was evacuated to Chu Lai.

A Co, 1st platoon, 1st squad at grid 747357, DTG 251430, element started moving from re-supply point towards the South. About 35 meters along the trail was a booby trap made out of an old US trip type flare. It was off to the side of the trail and camouflaged in a tuft of grass. It was tied to an old tent stake inside the tuff. The booby trap was blown up in place. The booby trap was fairly old.

One of the lift ships in Bravo Company's CA went down at grid 614405, DTG 251730. It was a soft landing & B Co, 3rd platoon, 2nd squad was on the bird at the time and secured it until it was picked up at 1755 hrs. Element was extracted back to San Juan Hill and will complete CA Nov 26.

B Co, 2nd platoon at grid 261605, while moving toward their night location, received 1 frag and 2 small arms rounds from the East. Result: 2 US WIA. Dust-off was called at 261610, 4/3 had guns in the area at the time and assisted dust-off 54 who was on station at 261615. Dust-off 54 made the priority pick-up at 261640....taking back 1 US to Duc Pho with multiple frag wounds to the face, both arms and left shoulder. Above element swept the area, finding 12 expended AK-47 rounds + one small glass bottle containing penicillin. The above element searched for 200 meters to the North and believed to be the escape route of the estimated 1 VC/NVA. During contact enemy was engaged with small arms. Man dusted-off. B Co CP, at grid 573453, DTG 271545, found rice paddy hooch, approximately 4'x6'.It was 6 months old and had 4 corner supports about 2 inches in diameter. It had a roof made of grass and had a hard packed floor. It was found next to a rice paddy. There was one old trail in the area, running in a NW-SE direction. Last estimated time of use-6 months.The hooch was destroyed.

D Co, 3rd platoon, 2nd squad, at grid 695379, DTG 281215, observed 2 VC/NVA approximately 50 meters S-E of the element, moving towards them on the trail. They engaged with small arms fire. Enemy evaded to the South....Called Arty in as a blocking force: 54 HE & 1 WP rounds. Person -nel were wearing black pj shorts w/blue shirts.

B Co, 3rd platoon, at grid 623460, DTG 281245, was on patrol, when they spotted a suspected enemy booby trap. One EM was instructed to shoot M -79 cannister rounds at it. He shot and one of the rounds hit a rock and glanced off and the shrapnel hit him in the face. Dust-off was called at 281258 and because of the weather the routine pick-up hasn't been made. The suspected enemy booby trap was nothing : upon closer inspection. EM to be dusted-off : Sp/4 Robert D. Lucas Dust-off completed at 1530 hrs.

Late Entry: D Co, 3rd platoon, 1st squad, at grid 691383 had a mech go off at grid 691385, at DTG 281909. They had movement around the location of the mech. A fire mission was fired from San Juan Hill of 1 WP & 10 HE rounds.. This fire mission was fired after the squad had movement at 281939. 105's HE were fired from 1940 hrs. to 2020 hrs. Will check out area in the morning.

Late Entry; B Co, 2nd platoon, 2nd squad, at grid 588461, DTG 291200, while moving towards a re-supply point to link up with the 2nd platoon, 1st squad. They found............ 6 hooches 6'x8' that would accommodate 15-20 people. They were on stilts and had bamboo & straw floors.They were in very thick bush ...just off of a stream. Blown by C-4 charges.

To Bde/Eachos: Co A CP requests a priority dust-off for: CPT William Jamison DTG 291600, at grid 745343. He was suffering from 104.5 degree temperture. Dust-off came on station twice (1630 hrs. & 1735 hrs.) but was unable to make pick-up due to weather conditions. Will attempt again at first light.

Late Entry: C Co CP, at grid 597464, DTG 291615, found a base camp approximately 50 meters X 100 meters. Inside the base camp they found 9 hooches-made of bamboo and banana leaves, and the approximately size of hooches were 10' x 20' - 3 of the hooches- had tunnels. More information in log page.

Weather Report, from Bde, S.E. Asia Weather Center issued weather warning ....indicating strong winds and rains accompanying a front moving South over RVN. Wind 30 knots W/gusts up to 40 knots. Rains 3-5 inches on coast & 6-8 inches in the mountains. Forecast thru 012100 Dec 70. Flood precautions are warranted ...Commanders should be prepared to evacuate as situation indicates and be prepared to render authorized assistance as required.

Late Entry: B Co. 2nd platoon, 2nd squad, at grid 592467, DTG 300923, while on patrol they found a 155 round on a streambed which ran N-S. It was half buried and was approximately 18" long. It was believed to be a dud round and they blew it up in place.

Late Entry: C Co, 2nd platoon, 2nd squad, at grid 616463, DTG 301600, found 4 hooches, 1st hooch 6'x10' w/ a animal shed in it and a sleeping position inside. 2nd hooch was 8'x12' w/ a tunnel , under the hooch approx 5' in diameter-10' long and then stopped. 3rd hooch 12'x 20', negative items inside. 4th hooch 8'x 12' w/AK magazine and tunnel under it.
